It is a nut protected by a spiny pod that is removed during harvest before being sold. Inside this pod are usually two or more nuts, each with a smooth, brown shell encasing a beige pulp.

The chestnut is a typical fruit of the fall and winter seasons, like other nuts. It is available in the market from early fall to late winter.
